We begin in Bolivia’s high-altitude capital, La Paz, acclimating to the Andes while experiencing the city’s vibrant culture and ancient Aymara traditions—riding El Teleférico high above the city, exploring the otherworldly formations of Valle de la Luna and the colorful Witches’ Market, savoring contemporary Bolivian cuisine, and taking in dramatic mountain views.
From there, we travel to the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni, where endless white salt plains stretch toward distant volcanic peaks beneath an immense Andean sky. We'll stay at Luna Salada Hotel de Sal & Spa, a boutique hotel perched on the edge of the salt flats and constructed almost entirely from locally harvested salt blocks. This special time of year—the transition between Bolivia’s rainy and dry seasons—offers the possibility of witnessing the Salar’s legendary mirror effect, when a thin layer of water transforms the vast salt flats into a breathtaking reflection of sky and clouds.
Next we continue to Sucre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Bolivia’s “White City,” with elegant colonial architecture, vibrant art and culture, beautiful mountain landscapes, and one of the world’s largest concentrations of fossilized dinosaur footprints (on a near vertical, 300-foot rock face). Our visit coincides with the renowned Tarabuco Sunday Market where members of the local Yampara Indigenous community descend from surrounding mountain villages to socialize, trade, shop, and sell beautifully handcrafted goods. Widely recognized for its cultural authenticity, the market offers a fascinating glimpse into enduring Andean traditions, with many locals dressed in distinctive traditional attire.
Next, we travel to Lake Titicaca and by boat to stunningly beautiful Isla del Sol, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Inca civilization. With no cars or roads, we'll explore this peaceful island on foot along ancient Inca and pre-Inca footpaths that wind through terraced hillsides and traditional villages. Upon our arrival at Isla del Sol, we'll walk approximately 30-40 minutes uphill to the top of the island (while our luggage is carried by donkeys) to our intimate boutique lodge overlooking the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and the snowcapped Cordillera Real ("Royal Mountain Range") beyond.
At the end of our adventure, we return to La Paz for a final evening together at one of the city’s finest restaurants.
